Design for Manufacturing: How Small Changes Can Save Big Costs

Design for manufacturing means designing a product so it can be produced reliably, economically and repeatedly. It does not mean weakening the product or reducing its value. It means making smart changes before production becomes expensive.

Small design changes can sometimes save large costs in tooling, assembly, material use, inspection and packaging.

Reeli helps clients review product designs from the viewpoint of practical Asian manufacturing.

A design that works may still be hard to manufacture

A product can look good and function correctly in a prototype but still be difficult to manufacture in quantity. It may require complex tooling, too many assembly steps, tight tolerances, unnecessary material, difficult inspection or fragile packaging.

These problems increase cost and risk.

A good manufacturing review asks:

  • Can the mold be simplified?
  • Can wall thickness be improved?
  • Can parts be combined or separated more logically?
  • Can assembly steps be reduced?
  • Can fasteners or inserts be improved?
  • Can inspection be made easier?
  • Can packaging protect the product more efficiently?

Asian manufacturing is changing

Manufacturing in Asia is no longer only about lower labour cost. Labour cost has increased, quality expectations are higher and many factories are becoming more specialised. Automation, tooling quality and process design matter more than before.

This means buyers should not rely only on manual work to solve design problems. A better approach is to design the product so production is easier to control.

Reeli balances “work smart” and “work hard”. We look for practical ways to reduce unnecessary labour, avoid excessive tooling investment and improve production stability.

Small changes can reduce hidden cost

A small radius may improve mold flow. A better draft angle may reduce ejection problems. A change in parting line may improve appearance. A more practical fastener design may reduce assembly time. A revised carton layout may lower freight cost.

These changes may not be obvious to a designer focused on market function, but they can be very important in production.

The earlier these changes are made, the cheaper they are. After tooling is completed, design changes become more difficult and costly.

Design review protects quality

Design for manufacturing also helps quality control. If a product is difficult to assemble or inspect, defects are more likely. If the product has clear assembly logic and test points, quality becomes easier to control.

For industrial products, molded parts and custom components, this can make a major difference between a successful project and repeated production issues.

Reeli’s role

Reeli helps clients connect product design with real production conditions. We review materials, tooling, assembly, labour, automation possibility, packaging and logistics together.

The goal is not to change the customer’s product unnecessarily. The goal is to help the product become easier to make, easier to control and more suitable for long-term supply.
